Interior design is both an art and science. You need a dose of creativity to bring out the beauty of your home, especially of your furniture and fixture. However, you also need to have good common sense to know how you can add more space. Most definitely, you have come across with plenty of guidelines on how to design or decorate your home, but you really do not need all of them. You just need to stick with the following:

1. Mirrors and pale colors always work in cramped space. When you have already let go of everything that you think you do not need and still the room does not appear too big, it is time to make use or mirrors and pale colors in your walls and floors. Both offer an illusion of more space simply because they refract light. They are inexpensive means, and they are very easy to maintain.

2. Check out trends but do not force yourself to follow it. It is advisable for every home owner to look at interior magasines and books just to keep himself updated of the latest changes in design. However, one should not be forced to take the necessary steps to keep up with the so-called trends. If you still have not noticed it yet, interior design is like fashion. What seems to be in demand these days will be passé the next. It is always best to stick to what is classic, forever, and, most of all, comfortable.

3. Settle for what you like. At the end of the day, you want a home that feels like an extension of yourself—one that reflects your personality. Though there are some do’s and don’t’s when it comes to interior design, the last decision should come from you. So if you want to paint the wall flashy red, because it makes you happy, then go for it. Nevertheless, listening to pieces of advice from others, particularly from interior designers, is not bad either. You may want to give it a try.

4. Do not hoard. Once in a while, you buy things on impulse. The problem is that most of those we acquire in this manner are the things that we don’t really need. Besides eating up space in our home, they are also of no use. If you’re used to impulsive shopping, it may take you a while before you can practice the art of making a wise consumer decision, but it will come. If you have some items that you don’t need, you can sell them or give them away to those who will find better use of these.

5. Don’t add a room unless you need one. Usually, home owners are tempted to expand their abode, such as add a room. It could be an attic, basement, or a sunroom. Unless you really see a necessity, don’t do it. It will not only be costly, but you will just realise that you have another more useless room to clean and maintain.
